This area is very characteristic of big companies, it is very not very common to see in small and medium companies this area, what doesn't mean that it doesn't exist as function carried out in companies but small inside other areas or developed by the part but upper-class of the structure. 
It is the area that takes charge of the development of the products, the market investigation and of materials or other aspects related with the product, for what this area is in interaction with production and with commercialization; and in many cases fused with some of these. This structural outline that proposes the pattern ACME is not strict, it simply defines the areas of a company divided in areas, typical as it defined it Fayol or the classic company of homogeneous production of Taylor.
